In fashion, fit is everything. Below are some tips from our expert faculty that will help ensure a good fit on your next me-made garment:

TIP #1: Choose a style that will look good on you. Try on similar ready-to-wear styles if you’re not sure.

TIP #2: Begin with the proper pattern size. Carefully check pattern measurements on the back of the pattern envelope to determine the right size for you. If you’re between sizes, choose the smaller size.

TIP #3: Compare tissue pattern measurements and body measurements plus ease.

TIP #4: Tissue-fit the pattern by pinning it together on the stitching line and trying it on as though it were one half of the garment.

TIP #5: Compare the tissue pattern to a finished, well-fitting garment of a similar style.

TIP #6: Know your body characteristics and what pattern alterations may be required for a good fit.

TIP #7: Make a muslin test garment before cutting into your fashion fabric.

TIP #8: Fit the garment as you sew. Test it on your body (or on your model) at all stages of the process. Don’t wait until the garment is finished to try it on. By then it may be too late to make changes!

TIP #9: Have fun! That’s what it’s all about, after all!
