Billy started out in culinary arts, but after his first few days in the kitchen learned that wasn’t the field for him. His mom suggested he look into fashion, and he found us on the web, signed up for classes and the rest is history! Billy jumped into classes and has been a key volunteer for us at the past two Artistry in Fashion events.

Billy enjoys creating costume-like work. He views fashion as not just the garment, but the experience it can provide the wearer as well.

“I think others see costumes as a shield, or something to hide behind. I see costumes as a sword, a way to stand out. To show others I am comfortable with myself. With costume, you make it your own.”

Outside of class Billy finds inspiration in working with his co-workers at Trader Joes and Starbucks. After getting engerized through interacting with others, he feels like his upbeat attitude inspires his designs.

Billy is in his third semester of classes and working towards our Technical, Custom Dressmaking, Theater Costuming degrees. After completion, he plans to transfer to Long Beach or San Diego State. His ultimate goals are to work in costuming for musical theater or the movies. He would also like to explore what he calls “theatrical runway,” which he explains is performance fashion like Cirque du Soleil.

We can’t wait to see what comes up next for Billy. Here is some of his work.
